# How to Audit and Cancel Subscriptions You Don't Use

Streaming, music, AI tools, cloud storage, that gym app you used twice — subscriptions multiply quietly until they're one of the biggest leaks in your budget. The average household pays for several they've forgotten about. Here's how to find and fix the waste.

## Step 1 — List every subscription in one place

You can't cut what you can't see. Go through your last two or three months of bank and card statements and write down every recurring charge — the amount, the provider, and the billing cycle (monthly, yearly, etc.). Don't forget annual ones; they're the easiest to forget and often the largest.

Tracking them in a dedicated subscription tracker (rather than a note you'll lose) means you can see the running monthly and yearly totals — which is usually a wake-up call on its own.

## Step 2 — Normalise everything to a monthly cost

A yearly subscription billed at $120 is $10 a month; a weekly one at $5 is about $21 a month. Converting everything to a monthly figure lets you compare them fairly and see the true size of each one. Add them up — the total is often higher than people expect.

## Step 3 — Sort by priority: essential, nice-to-have, cancel

Label each subscription. Essential ones you'd repurchase tomorrow. Nice-to-haves you enjoy but could live without. And the cancel pile — anything you haven't opened in a month or genuinely forgot you were paying for.

The cancel pile is free money. Cancelling it has zero impact on your life because you weren't using it anyway.

## Step 4 — Spot overlaps and duplicates

Three streaming services? Two cloud-storage plans? Most people only actively use one of each at a time. Rotating — keeping one active and resubscribing to others only when there's something you want — can cut a category's cost by half or more without losing access to anything you actually watch or use.

## Step 5 — Switch essentials to annual and set renewal reminders

For the subscriptions you're keeping, check whether an annual plan is cheaper — most discount 15–20% versus monthly. And set a reminder a few days before each renewal so you get a chance to reconsider before you're charged again, especially for free trials about to convert.

A good subscription tracker handles steps 2–5 for you: it normalises costs, flags low-priority and overlapping subscriptions, and reminds you before renewals.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do I find all my subscriptions?

Review your last 2–3 months of bank and card statements for recurring charges, including annual ones. List each with its amount and billing cycle, ideally in a subscription tracker so you can see the running monthly and yearly totals.

### How much money do people waste on unused subscriptions?

Studies consistently find households underestimate their subscription spending by a wide margin and pay for several services they no longer use — often hundreds of dollars a year that auditing and cancelling would recover.

### What's the easiest way to manage subscriptions?

Track them all in one place, normalise each to a monthly cost, label them by priority, and set renewal reminders. A dedicated subscription tracker automates the math and flags overlaps and cancel candidates for you.
